If your heating system is approaching replacement age, you’ve probably heard both pitches: “heat pumps are the future” and “you’ll freeze without gas.” Neither is the whole story. Here’s the comparison we actually walk Columbus homeowners through.
How each one heats
A gas furnace burns natural gas in a heat exchanger and blows air across it. Output is instant, powerful, and independent of outdoor temperature. Modern units are rated by AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency): an old 80 AFUE furnace sends 20% of your gas bill up the flue; a 96 AFUE unit keeps nearly all of it in the house.
A heat pump moves heat instead of making it — in winter it extracts heat from outdoor air (yes, even cold air contains heat) and pumps it inside; in summer it runs in reverse as an air conditioner. Because moving heat takes far less energy than generating it, a heat pump routinely delivers two to three units of heat per unit of electricity.
The cold-weather question
The old objection — “heat pumps quit when it’s freezing” — described 1990s equipment. Modern cold-climate heat pumps hold their rated capacity down to around 5°F and keep operating below that at reduced output. Columbus winters spend most of their hours in the 20s and 30s, squarely inside a heat pump’s comfort zone.
That said, deep cold snaps are real here. That’s why many of our best installs are dual-fuel: a heat pump carries the bulk of the season at low operating cost, and a gas furnace takes over automatically below the balance point — usually somewhere in the teens. You get the heat pump’s economy and the furnace’s brute force, each doing what it does best.
Where each one wins
A gas furnace tends to win when:
- You already have gas service and recent ductwork.
- Your electric rates are high relative to gas.
- You want the lowest upfront cost for straight heating.
A heat pump tends to win when:
- You’re replacing the AC and the furnace anyway — one system does both jobs.
- Your home is all-electric or you’re moving away from gas.
- You qualify for utility or state efficiency rebates, which regularly favor heat pumps.
- You have no ductwork at all — ductless mini-splits retrofit beautifully into older homes.
The numbers that actually decide it
Skip the ideology; three numbers settle most cases: your gas rate, your electric rate, and the balance point of the specific equipment being quoted. A good contractor will run your actual utility rates through the comparison and show you projected annual operating costs for each option — and size whatever you choose with a Manual J load calculation rather than copying the old nameplate.
If a quote skips the load calculation or can’t tell you the balance point, that’s a red flag, whichever box the equipment comes in.
