How long should a furnace or air conditioner last?
With regular maintenance: 15–20 years for a gas furnace, 12–17 for a central AC, and 12–15 for a heat pump (it works year-round, so it accumulates hours faster). Neglected systems commonly die 5 years earlier. Past those ranges, repairs get more frequent and efficiency lags modern equipment enough that replacement often pays for part of itself in utility savings.
Should I repair my old system or replace it?
Our rule of thumb is the "$5,000 rule": multiply the repair cost by the system's age — if it tops $5,000 (say, a $500 repair on a 12-year-old unit), replacement usually deserves a serious look. We always quote the repair honestly and, when the math is close, show the replacement price beside it with real operating-cost estimates so you can decide with numbers instead of pressure.
How much does a new AC or furnace cost?
In the Columbus market, most standard-efficiency AC replacements land in the $6,000–$9,000 range installed, gas furnaces $5,500–$8,500, and full system replacements (furnace + AC or a heat pump system) roughly $12,000–$18,000 depending on size and efficiency tier. Heat pump or gas furnace — which is right for Ohio?
Both work well here, and the honest answer depends on your gas availability, electric rates, and how long you'll own the home. Modern cold-climate heat pumps heat efficiently well below freezing and give you AC in the same box; gas furnaces still win on raw output during deep cold snaps.
